You've been hearing songs all week from your feature album: Vance Joy's Nation of Two. Now, let's pull back the curtain and hear the stories behind the songwriting heartthrob's latest.
After coming off the road in from touring his world-busting debut album Dream Your Life Away, Vance Joy had two or three songs to his name but was keen to knuckle down on what would become Nation of Two out today.
There's no doubting his talent for pulling together infectious, emotive sing-alongs, so let's explore Nation of Two through songs written in hotel rooms, with surprising collaborators, and that time he found inspiration after going down a Kanye West YouTube hole. Have a listen and read on:. I think Paul Kelly described them as odd socks, you have them lying around looking for another match. Interestingly, he nearly gave up on the track, which went on to hit 2x Platinum in Australia and earned Vance his seventh Hottest entry ranking 9 in the countdown.
Thanks everybody, super stoked. This one's been in the pocket since , Vance explains. This song came up about wanting to be home and was brought on by being away for so long.
In the production, we went for something uplifiting and triumphant. The single was co-written with Dan Wilson, former frontman of ' Closing Time ' hit-makers Semisonic-turned-award winning songwriter to Adele, Halsey, K. Flay, and many more.
When I was writing this song, I was travelling from my little AirBnB in Venice Beach to the studio in Malibu and I got to drive my car on this beautiful stretch of coastal highway and I think that drive inspired some of the lyrics. Finished at the start of , as a "bit of a breakthrough" after a creative dry spell, the bridge and outro to the song has a more bizarre origin story dating back to I was sharing a room with my drummer Edwin [White] and we had a really cheesy pizza after the gig and a few beers.
Add to that, the altitude, and at 3am Edwin looked over at my bed and I was dry wretching. I ran to the bathroom, was really sick, spent from 4am-7am in a bath watching Kanye West interviews on YouTube.
Got out and had to go driving all day in a little van In the morning, I started writing the bridge to that song and it came together. I think I was so not in my own head, there was no overthinking. I just played something and recorded it into my phone. Quite simply, Vance calls this "one of my favourite tracks" and it's littered with his knack for visual storytelling.
I wrote the chorus, I was in a little hotel room in Surry Hills in Sydney, I was really excited by the melody. My favourite part of this song is the bridge and my drummer Edwin who does a bunch of production on the album as well, did really nice string parts.
This song came about really quickly and it was pretty effortless. It was a pleasure to work with him and we wrote this in a day. Over hushed, plucked guitar, Vance recounts a childhood accident " about when I fell off my bike as a little tacker " but more broadly it sees him reflecting on growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne. It was a nice surprise," Vance says of the plaintive closer to Nation Of Two, a title he came up with after bingeing on cult literary genius Kurt Vonnegut and a Richard Ford book titled Between Them.
The idea that their love for each other gives them their bearings, a point of reference that makes sense of life. You'll find all the dates and info here. Music News Hack. Friday 23 February pm. Image: Justin Bettman. Share Facebook Twitter Mail Whatsapp. Music News. Thu 27 Aug
